After relocating the shop to Kamigyo-ku-touzai-cho, the second successor, Yosajiro opens a shop in front of Dodo-Gosho, Hokyo-Ji-temple (imperial palace) of imperial princess Kazunomiya. The shop is succeeded by third successor, Izaburou and forth successor, Emiko, continuing up to few hundreds of years of Wagasa manufacturing.

Although Hiyoshiya is now the only manufacturer of Wagasa, the fifth successor, Kotaro sustains the traditional techniques, and keeps the shop going.

Wagasa is often referred to “flower” that is added to the beautiful art of Kabuki and Tea-ceremony and other traditional performances and cultural events.. It is valued as an essential prop to spice up the beauty of Japanese culture. Wagasa is currently used as displays in Japanese style hotels (Ryokan), and its advertisements, too. It is also popular as a gift to foreign countries and is widely favoured.

Unfortunately, the Wagasa industry is under threat of vanishing due to the change of people’s needs and wants over time. It is now common that many traditions lose its value and even vanish due to lack of consumers. To overcome the crisis, Hiyoshiya will sustain the tradition by accepting the changes, combining it with new ideas and criterias (needs and wants) of modernised lifestyle. The tradition will be “re-innovated” inorder to fit the modern lifestyle. It will be given a new value; which can continue to be understood and related to people of modern times.

We value our motto, “Tradition is Continuing Innovation”.

KYOTO HEAD OFFICE

Address:

546 Dodo-cho, Horikawa Teranouchi-higashi-iru, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto

Phone Number:

+81-75-441-6644

Fax:

+81-75-441-6645

Open

10:00～17:00

Closed:

Saturday, Sunday, End and start of the year
*Reservations of 3 days prior to the visit is required if the visit is during the weekend.

Access

Train(JR):

Please take #9 city bus from JR Kyoto Station.

Subway:

15-minute walk from Imadegawa Station.

Hankyu line:

Please go to Horikawa-Street from Shijo-Omiya station and take the #9 or #12 city bus.

City Bus:

Please take #9 city bus from JR Kyoto Station or Nijo-jo-castle /
Please take #12 city bus from Shijo-Kawaramachi. 1min walk from the bus stop, Horikawa-Terano-Uchi.

Car:

Saturday, Sunday, End and start of the year
*Reservations of 3 days prior to the visit is required if the visit is during the weekend.

HIYOSHIYA FIFTH GENERATION

KOTARO NISHIBORI
Traditional artifact “Kyo-Wagasa”
Hiyoshiya fifth generation

Fifth-generation of Hiyoshiya, the only Kyo Wagasa manufacturer.
Born in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture.
